More than six months after Vedaa, John Abraham would be returning to the big screen with The Diplomat. His Independence Day release had arrived alongside Stree 2 and Khel Khel Mein where the horror comedy had taken over the box office without any competition whatsoever. John had done well in the film, but Stree 2 storm meant that Vedaa couldn’t sustain itself in theaters.
Now arrives The Diplomat where John would be seen in a very different avatar altogether, just like was the case in Parmanu: The Story of Pokharan where it was brains instead of brawn coming into action. The film is set in Pakistan where John plays the part of an Indian diplomat. Ready for quite some time, the film is now finally seeing a theatrical release for itself, albeit with very limited promotion and marketing. This one is set as a word-of-mouth film, while the good part is that it’s pretty much seeing a solo release for itself and that too on Holi.
Arriving on this day has its own advantage and disadvantage as on one side this is a national holiday and on the other side theatres start operating only post afternoon. In this particular case, it’s not even a quintessential Holiday release as usually on this festival, massy films arrive and The Diplomat is purely multiplex oriented and that too at key urban centres to begin with. That should ensure a Rs. 3-4 crores start at the box office and post that it would be word of mouth that would be the deciding factor.
