Videos of the attack show the assailants, some with their faces covered in black cloth, swarming Hussain and launching their assault.

A group of unidentified men armed with cricket bats attacked Congress Dhubri Lok Sabha MP Rakibul Hussain and his personal security officers (PSOs) in broad daylight on Thursday in Assam’s Nagaon district, leaving two of his security officers injured.

The incident took place at Natun Bazar in Rupahihat while Hussain was travelling on a scooter to attend a party workers’ meeting.

Videos of the attack, which have gone viral on social media, show the assailants, some with their faces covered in black cloth, swarming Hussain and launching their assault. Hussain’s PSOs tried to intervene but were also targeted.

The footage further shows an attacker striking Hussain with a bat before fleeing. The remaining attackers then set upon the MP’s PSOs, leading one officer to fire warning shots into the air, causing the attackers to disperse.

Following the attack, police arrived at the scene and took the Congress leader to a hospital.

While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, Hussain spoke to The Indian Express about the incident. He revealed that he had anticipated potential threats and chose to travel on scooters with his two security officers and son, Tanzil.

“We knew about the potential threat of car attacks, which is why we decided to travel on two-wheelers. The SP had mentioned that breaking cars is a bailable offence and insurance wouldn’t cover the damage. We didn’t expect a physical attack, though. I’ve informed the SP, and he said he has taken it up with the OC,” the Dhubri MP told the publication.

Police Investigation Underway

Swapnaneel Deka, Superintendent of Police of Nagaon district, confirmed the incident, stating, “Today at around 2.35 pm, we received information that Member of Parliament Rakibul Hussain, while he was travelling from Nagaon to attend a meeting in Rupahihat, he was wrongfully restrained by some miscreants, confronted and tried to attack him.”

“The PSOs deployed were able to save him from miscreants. During the incident, one of the PSOs fired in the air in self-defence to disperse the mob. The PSO filed an FIR and investigation in the case is underway,” the Nagaon SP added.

Congress Respond

The attack on Hussain has sparked strong reactions from Congress leaders. Debabrata Saikia, Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, criticised the BJP-led Himanta Biswa Sarma government for its handling of law and order in the state.

“Today, the CM, while replying to the Governor’s address claimed that crime rate has decreased and conviction rate has increased in the state. How can his claim be justified if, in broad daylight MP from Dhuri has been assaulted by a mob near a police station?…This is the deterioration of law and order. Police has a bad reputation due to ongoing syndicates in the state,” Saikia told news agency ANI.

Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi also voiced his concerns on X, criticising the audacity of the attack and the lack of immediate action, stating, “In Assam a Congress Lok Sabha MP is attacked by thugs in broad daylight in a busy market place. The goons even attack the police security officers and try to snatch their weapons. All of this is recorded on camera.”

He further emphasised the danger of the situation, saying, “If the goons had got hold of the machine gun a terrible tragedy could have taken place. The attitude of the Chief Minister will only embolden the thieves, dacoits, smugglers and those accused of murder. Democracy is under threat and people of Assam want freedom from this gunda raj culture.”
