A fight broke out between two groups of students at the institute canteen on Wednesday over an issue related to food on Mahashivratri, Delhi Police said. The video of a female student being beaten up inside the South Asian University (SAU) campus also went viral on social media. The victim student informed the police by making a PCR call. At present, she is being medically examined, and “facts are being verified”, the police told news agency ANI.
ABVP allegedly requested the mess administration to serve satvik to students who were observing fast on Maha Shivratri. They claimed that SFI “deliberately tried to spoil” the religious harmony on the campus by trying to serve non-veg food in the mess, the report added.

ABVP Delhi State Secretary Sarthak Sharma said, “Every student has the right to follow his religious beliefs and traditions, and this right should be respected. When the university administration itself has made arrangements for satvik food in the mess, trying to forcibly serve non-vegetarian food there is not only insensitive but also ideological terrorism. Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad strongly condemns this act and demands that the administration take strict action against those leftist goons who tried to spoil this harmonious atmosphere and hurt the religious sentiments of fasting students and resorted to violence against normal students.”
Meanwhile, the Students’ Federation of India claimed students at South Asian University were reportedly attacked in the university mess by members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). “ABVP viciously attacked the students of South Asian University in the university mess because they were not complying with ABVP’s draconian and undemocratic demand that no non-veg should be served in the university mess owing to Maha Shivratri,” SFI said.
They further added that the university mess is a “common place” for all and imposing dietary practices of one community on others is “undemocratic and unsecular.” “ABVP goons are seen on video manhandling and attacking students in the mess. The goons grabbed the hair of women students and dragged them violently during the attack. They also attacked the mess staff for serving non-veg food,” SFI said, adding that ABVP must be stopped before they “unleash more violence in the campus” against common students condemning their attack.
