All set for South India Derby Stakes on Pongal day

The HPSL South India Derby Stakes, a Grade 1 race for 4-year-old horses to be run over a distance of 2400m at 4:30 p.m. on January 14, will be the highlight of the Pongal race meeting to be held at the Madras Race Club on January 13 and 14.

The prestigious race, which has nine horses in the fray, including two from Hyderabad and four from Bengaluru, carries a prize-money of ₹1.42 crore, of which the winner will take home ₹86,14,398, according to a press release from the Madras Race Club on Saturday.

Apart from the Derby, other important races in the 14-race card, split equally across the two days, include the Dashmesh Stud Million, Nanoli Stud Fillies and Mares Championship, and Madras Race Club Commemoration Cup (all on Jan. 13) and the Pongal Million, Dr. M.A.M. Ramasamy Memorial, and Usha Stud Million (scheduled for Jan. 14).

The MRC is adding ₹5 lakh to the net Jackpot pool on January 14.
