Aamir Khan recently defended his film Laapataa Ladies from criticism that it perpetuates a “backward mentality” and feeds into the notion of “poverty porn.” Directed by Kiran Rao, the film is India’s official entry for the Best International Feature category at the Oscars. The movie’s storyline, set in rural India, follows the comedic yet thought-provoking misadventures of two brides who are accidentally exchanged at a railway station.
Aamir Khan DEFENDS Laapataa Ladies against “Backward mentality” claims ahead of Oscars: “I don’t think people have misconceptions about what India is like”
Aamir Khan Addresses Criticism of ‘Backward Mentality’
In a recent interview with BBC Asian Network, Aamir was asked whether films like Laapataa Ladies, which are set in rural settings, contribute to outdated views of India and perpetuate regressive stereotypes. Responding to concerns about the film promoting a “backward mentality,” Aamir explained that not all of India’s films are set in villages or reflect the country’s struggles with poverty.
He explained, “Not all the films we make are set in villages. A lot of our films are accepted all over the world. I don’t think audiences all over the world have any major misconceptions about how India is anymore. Maybe at one time, it was true that they felt India was a land of snake charmers and elephants. But that’s a thing of the past now. I don’t think people have misconceptions about what India is like anymore, not to that extent, certainly.”
He also expressed confidence in the film’s international appeal, stating, “We should give them more credit—they’ve seen films from all over the world.”
Global Resonance of Laapataa Ladies
Laapataa Ladies, which centres on the accidental exchange of two brides at a train station, brings humor and life lessons to the screen. While the film’s setting and characters might initially suggest a rural backdrop, Aamir believes the story holds universal themes that will resonate with audiences worldwide. “It’s a swift screen experience that has something meaningful to say,” said Aamir.
The film, produced by Aamir Khan, Jyoti Deshpande, and Kiran Rao, has been hailed as a unique narrative in Indian cinema. The screenplay, written by Sneha Desai, is based on an award-winning story by Biplab Goswami. Aamir’s production company, Aamir Khan Productions, collaborated with Kindling Productions for this project, and it has already garnered attention as India’s official entry for the Oscars.
