Several videos circulating on social media have brought attention to an unexpectedly simple method for alleviating constipation — crossing one leg over the other. This technique, which might seem too easy to be effective, might provide quick relief from digestive discomfort. 

According to a reel by Dr Karan Rajan, “If you want to poop faster, you might wanna try this. This isn’t gonna solve chronic constipation issues or replace a fibre-rich diet, but if you’re experiencing sudden internal plumbing issues, this could be your get-out-of-poop jail-free card.”

How it works

Dr Pranav Honnavara Srinivasan, consultant gastroenterologist at Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru, says, “When you sit with your feet flat on the floor, the angle between your rectum and anus (the anorectal angle) is relatively sharp. This can create a kink, making it harder for stool to pass through. Crossing your legs raises your knees, which can relax your pelvic floor muscles and open up that angle, allowing for a smoother passage.”

He adds that crossing your legs can subtly increase intra-abdominal pressure. This slight compression on your abdomen might gently nudge stool towards the exit. “It’s important to note that this technique isn’t a magic bullet. The scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness is limited, but anecdotal reports and some small studies suggest that it might help some individuals.”

The effectiveness of leg crossing for constipation relief, Dr Srinivasan says, can vary depending on several factors:

Severity of Constipation: If you’re experiencing mild constipation, this technique might offer some relief. However, for severe or chronic constipation, it’s unlikely to be a standalone solution.

Underlying Causes: The root cause of your constipation matters. If it’s related to diet, lifestyle, or a medical condition, crossing your legs might be less effective than addressing those underlying issues.

Individual Anatomy: Everyone’s body is different. The shape of your pelvis and the positioning of your internal organs can influence how leg crossing affects your anorectal angle.

Dr Srinivasan stresses that while there’s no harm in trying this technique regularly, it’s not necessarily a long-term solution or preventive measure for constipation.

He says, “If you find that crossing your legs helps you have more comfortable bowel movements, feel free to incorporate it into your toilet routine.” However, don’t rely solely on leg crossing to manage constipation. For long-term digestive health, it’s essential to prioritise a fibre-rich diet, adequate hydration, and regular exercise.
