Several Indian car brands are capitalising on the rising demand for SUVs by introducing ‘Black Edition’ variants. With a blacked-out exterior and cabin, these models are targeted at buyers looking for a distinctive yet rugged aesthetic.

Mahindra Scorpio Classic Boss Edition
Exterior and interior
The Boss Edition accessory package exclusive to the top Mahindra Scorpio Classic S11 variant is offered as a dealer-level upgrade. The exterior’s chrome trims, like the front grille and fog lamp housing, get the dark effect, further extending to the bonnet scoop, rear quarter glass, headlamps and tail-lamps. The special edition also adds rain visors, a front skid plate, a rear guard with black powder coating and a rear-view camera, while the wing mirror caps are finished in a faux carbon fibre finish.

On the inside, the Boss Edition features black seat upholstery and Mahindra’s Comfort Kit, which introduces cushions and neck pillows in the range-topping Scorpio Classic.
Engine and transmission
Powering the Scorpio Classic is a sole 2.2-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine producing 132hp and 300Nm of peak torque. All of this output is sent to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Tata Harrier Dark and Stealth Editions
Exterior and interior
While the Stealth Edition is based on the top-spec Harrier Fearless + trim, the Dark Edition is available from Pure + S trim to the top-end for the Tata Harrier. Also, the Stealth Edition is limited to 2,700 units only. The primary difference between the two black editions is that the Dark uses a gloss black paint, and the Stealth adds a matte black finish. A fully black front grille, bumper and skid plate are common exterior features, but the Stealth brings a new design for the alloy wheels and ‘STEALTH’ badging on the fender.

Some chrome touches, like on the door handles, are seen in the cabin of the Dark SUV from Tata. Whereas, the limited edition Stealth goes for an all-black treatment. In terms of features, the Harrier’s top model packs Level 2 ADAS, seven airbags, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, a 10-speaker JBL audio system, connected car tech and dual-zone climate control.

The Harrier SUV gets a Stellantis-sourced 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine that makes 170hp and 350Nm and is paired to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox.

Tata Safari Dark and Stealth Editions

With the Tata Safari, the Stealth Edition is offered on the top Accomplished + trim, and the Dark Edition is available from Pure + S trim. Similar to the Harrier’s Stealth and Dark Editions, the Safari gets blacked-out trims around the exterior, ranging from the fully black front grille to alloy wheels.
However, only the Safari offers six- or seven-seat options with additional features over the smaller Harrier, like front heated and cooled cup holders, ventilated front and middle row seats, AC vents on the pillars and captain seats (in six-seater variants).
Engine and transmission
The 170hp-2.0-litre diesel engine continues to be offered here as well, alongside 6-speed manual or torque converter automatic transmissions.

Honda Elevate Black and Signature Black Editions
Exterior and interior
Based on the top ZX trim, the Honda Elevate Black Edition comes in a Crystal Black Pearl exterior paint shade with all-black alloy wheels. There’s a silver finish on the doors’ lower part, upper grille, and roof rails. With the Signature Black Edition, all the silver bits are darkened-out and ‘Signature Black Edition’ and ‘S’ badges are present around the body.

Talking about Elevate’s interior, a seven-colour ambient interior lighting package is offered with the Signature Black beside black seats and dashboard. Borrowed features from the standard Elevate SUV include a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, leatherette seating, a single-pane sunroof, camera-based ADAS and automatic headlights and wipers.
Engine and transmission
There are no mechanical changes in the powertrain, which means the blacked-out Elevate comes with the 121hp, 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, mated to either a manual or a CVT automatic gearbox.

MG Hector/ Hector Plus Blackstorm Edition
Exterior and interior
The MG Hector Blackstorm Edition comes finished in a Starry-black exterior colour paint and replaces the chrome details with a gun-metal finish along with red accents. This theme extends to the grille, the MG logo and even the lining on the bumpers. The 18-inch alloy wheels and roof rails get a gloss-black finish, while customers can also have a ‘Blackstorm’ emblem on the front fenders at no extra cost.

The all-black treatment is further given with gun-metal trims on the centre console, steering wheel, AC vents and door trims. The black seats and leatherette upholstery with ‘Blackstorm’ embossed on the front headrests confirm the dark credentials of the MG SUV. The MG Hector Plus Blackstorm Edition gets all of the above features but adds the option of 6 or 7 seats. Since they are based on the second-from-top Sharp Pro trim, the feature list comprises a 14-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen, panoramic sunroof, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charger, push button engine start/stop and a smart key.

The Hector Blackstorm Edition is available with the petrol-CVT and diesel-MT powertrains. That means you get the 143hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine mated to a CVT transmission or a 170hp, 2.0-litre diesel engine mated to a 6-speed manual.

Mahindra Scorpio N Carbon Edition
Exterior and interior
The recently launched Mahindra Scorpio N Carbon Edition is reserved for the Z8 and Z8L top models. The dark theme blacks out the otherwise chrome door handles and window side moulding. Also, the black alloy wheels (up to 18 inches) are exclusive to the Carbon Edition.

Inside, everything from the dashboard and leatherette seats to door trims is in line with the pitch-black philosophy. Note that one can have this black Scorpio N top model only in the seven-seat configuration. As for features, an 8-inch touchscreen, a sunroof, drive modes, dual-zone AC, 12 speakers and six airbags are offered.
Engine and transmission
Under the hood, the new Scorpio N variant continues with the 203hp, 2-litre turbo petrol engine or the 175hp, 2.2-litre diesel engine. Both of these can be had with either a 6-speed manual transmission or an automatic transmission. However, the four-wheel drive (4WD) option can only be had with the 2.2 diesel.

Jeep Compass Night Eagle and Blackshark Editions

The Jeep Compass comes in two Black Editions – Night Eagle (Longitude (O) variant) and higher-spec Blackshark (Limited (O) variant). As with other black SUVs here, the black treatment has been applied to the front grille, roof rails and alloy wheels. Notably, it is the only SUV in this list to feature multiple colours over a single black paint – up to seven.

With the Jeep Compass Night Eagle, you get partial leatherette seats, a manual IRVM, two-way electrically adjustable front seats and two airbags. The Jeep Compass Blackshark model takes it a notch up with leather seats, automatic IRVM, six-way electrically adjustable front seats and six airbags. Common features include a panoramic sunroof, wireless charger, front and rear dashcam, ambient lighting and an air purifier.
Engine and transmission
Both the Compass Night Eagle and Blackshark can be had with a 2.0-litre diesel engine with a front-wheel drive (FWD) configuration. This engine makes 170hp and 350Nm of torque and can be had with either a 6-speed manual transmission or an optional 9-speed torque converter automatic.
