How Can Arsenal Win Champions League? Thierry Henry Gives His Take (Picture credit: AP)
Former France striker Thierry Henry has said that it has been the story of Arsenal not being able to win the Champions Trophy, and for them to achieve the feat, all the players will need to be fit on the given day.
Arsenal have been hit hard by injuries in the current season as several of their important players have sat out multiple matches.
Henry, who led Arsenal to their first-ever Champions League final 19 years ago, spoke about his former team’s chances of winning the tournament this season. They lost to Barcelona on that occasion, having played almost the entire match with 10 men.
“It’s been the story of the club. We haven’t won it, even me as a player (for Arsenal). We went to the final and we know what happened in the final. It never happened,” Henry said while speaking to Goal.
“It’s not easy, it took Manchester City a long time to win it. You need everybody to be fit, you need everybody to play that game on that day, home and away. You need to have that final where everything goes your way,” Henry added.
Arsenal will play PSV in their next Champions League game, in the first leg of the tie, on March 5 at the Philips Stadion. They are currently placed third in the league, behind Liverpool and Barcelona.
“It’s open. Apart from Liverpool, who you can say have been consistent in the league and Champions League, you can see how they might be successful. And still you don’t know,” Henry said when asked who will win the tournament.
“There are teams who are up-and down. Barca is very successful in the Champions League but is up-and-down in the league. (Real) Madrid didn’t start well, they went into the play-off against City,” Henry added.
If Arsenal beat PSV, they will face either Real or Atletico Madrid in the quarterfinals. The first year of the tournament’s new format has sprung up a few surprises already, with Manchester City already out before the last 16 stage.
