Premier League table-toppers secured a seven-point lead over closest competitors Arsenal with their 2-1 win over Wolves at Anfield on Sunday. Goals from Luis Diaz and Mohammed Salah ensured that Arne Slot’s men would clinch all points on offer despite a late surge from Wolves underpinned by a Matheus Cunha second-half strike.

Liverpool, who headed into the tunnel with a two-goal cushion, were up against a resilient Wolves who demonstrated intense intent in the second period of the game as the visitors bombarded the Liverpool altar with as many as ten shots in the final forty-five.

Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah explained that the win over the battling Wolves was a huge test of character for the champions-elect and opined the picking up wins despite not being able to play at your best level was a quintessential quality to clinch silverware.

“It was a battle. I think they threw everything they could at us and it’s one of those games you have to show your mentality,” Quansah said.

“It’s not always going to look perfect, but the scrappy ones are always good when you get the three points,” he added.

Quansah voiced that being able to dig out wins proves even more crucial towards the end of the season and that the side needs to be prepared to slug it out if the need arises.

“That’s it. You have to have so many things in your arsenal to win the Premier League. Being able to do it a nice way and playing football like we want to – but then at the same time showing the ugly side of the game and showing we’re capable of doing that,” the 22-year-old said.

“We’ll have to do it more and more towards the end of the season. As long as we’re ready and we know we can do as we’ve just shown out there, I think we’ll be in good stead,” the Englishman added.

Liverpool boss Slot said that he was happy with the mentality the team exhibited to get past Wolves and emphasised the importance of such hard-fought wins.

“Wolves got better and better, we got worse and worse. We had to show a different mentality, which we did and got it over the line,” the Liverpool gaffer said.

“In a season like this we have played so many great games, but in a season if you want to win something you have to win the difficult ones as well when you are not playing your best,” the Dutchman added.
