Vicky Kaushal’s latest release, Chhaava, has not only set a new benchmark at the box office but has also emerged as the all-time highest Valentine’s Day grosser. The historical action film, directed by Laxman Utekar, raked in a massive Rs. 33.10 crore on its first day, surpassing all previous films that released on Valentine’s Day. Featuring Rashmika Mandanna in a pivotal role, the film is based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of the legendary Shivaji Maharaj. An adaptation of the Marathi novel Chhava by Shivaji Sawant, the film has struck a chord with audiences, particularly in Maharashtra, where its collections saw an exponential rise.
Collecting Rs. 33.10 crore on opening day, Chhaava has outperformed previous releases like Gully Boy that collected Rs. 19.40 crore by a huge margin and nearly doubled the collection of Gunday that had collected Rs. 16.12 crore, which previously held the second spot. Even blockbuster romantic films like Love Aaj Kal and Roy, which were Valentine’s Day successes, fell significantly behind in comparison. In fact, with Chhaava outperforming previous Valentine’s Day releases, Vicky Kaushal has now managed to exceed several major Bollywood superstars like Ranveer Singh, Akshay Kumar, Arjun Kapoor, and Shah Rukh Khan who have had releases on the same date.
This massive box office success is currently being attributed to the fact that the film is deeply rooted in Maratha history, thanks to this it witnessed a phenomenal response in Maharashtra, with audiences turning out in record numbers. Early estimates suggest that Maharashtra alone contributed nearly Rs. 18-20 crore to the opening day total, the highest regional contribution for any Vicky Kaushal film.
The grand success of Chhaava further cements Vicky Kaushal’s status as a box-office powerhouse. His transition from delivering content-driven hits to commanding record-breaking numbers showcases his growing star power. Currently, trade states that the film’s extraordinary opening indicates that Chhaava is poised for a long and successful box-office run, potentially becoming one of the biggest blockbusters of 2025. But one thing for certain is that with its unprecedented success on Valentine’s Day, Chhaava has redefined historical action dramas and reaffirmed the audience’s appetite for powerful storytelling.
