David Moyes, who returned to the helm of his beloved Everton, will befittingly lead Everton in the final Merseyside Derby at the fabled Goodison Park as Liverpool come visiting their cross-town rivals on Wednesday.
The Toffees are slated to move out of their historic home at the end of this season to play in their new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium on Liverpool’s waterfront.
Moyes, who helped the Toffees to three finishes above local rivals during his first stint at the club between 2002 and 2013, returned following the dismissal of Sean Dyche and will look to bridge the gap between the rival sides that has widened in recent years.
The fixture which was originally scheduled to be played in December was pushed due to Storm Darragh.
“I think the gap between the two teams at the moment is probably as big as it’s been for a long time,” Moyes began.
“It’s something I have to try and bridge and start bringing the two clubs closer together. I certainly need to bring my club closer to their club if I can,” the Scotsman added.
Moyes, who led Everton to their latest PL finish above Liverpool all the way back in the 2012/13 season, will look to make things as difficult for table-toppers Liverpool who remain six points clear of closest challengers Arsenal with a game in hand over the Gunners too.
“I think it was only in the last couple of years where we did finish above them in the Premier League (as well as 2005) so it’s something we have to try and aim to do again,” the 61-year-old continued.
“We’ve always been chasing Liverpool and probably no more so than now, we’ve got a few years to go before we’re going to be ready to compete against Liverpool again,” Moyes added.
Everton have managed to hold Liverpool to nine draws in their previous twelve trips to Goodison Park, and will be buoyant on the back of three consecutive wins in the English top-flight leading into the game.
