Tata Motors has begun work on the next-generation Nexon compact SUV that’s expected to hit showrooms in 2027. The project is internally codenamed the ‘Garud’. The next-gen Tata Nexon will be based on a heavily modified version of the existing X1 platform.

Next-gen Tata Nexon: what to expect?
The current-generation Nexon was launched in September 2017, and has been updated with two comprehensive facelifts – the first came in 2020, and then a second one followed in 2023. So, a 2027 timeline for the second-generation SUV means the first-gen model will have served for 10 years, which is pretty long in automotive lifecycles.

Incidentally, the next-generation Nexon will carry over the current X1 platform which traces its roots back to the Indica from the late 1990s. This platform has been majorly overhauled over the years (including with the 2023 Nexon facelift) and the forthcoming generation update is also expected to bring massive structural updates. Aesthetically too, expect a majorly overhauled exterior and interior design in line with newer Tata models, although specific details are currently quite scarce.
Next-gen Tata Nexon: powertrain options
The next-generation Nexon is expected to continue with its current petrol and CNG powertrains, but it is unclear if it will continue with the diesel. As we have reported previously, the Nexon’s 1.5-litre diesel mill barely cleared the current BS6.2 emission norms. It remains to be seen if Tata Motors further updates this engine for BS7 given the declining share of diesel in the compact class.
An update in line with the combustion variants of the Nexon can also be expected for the Nexon EV, but it remains to be seen if Tata Motors introduces them simultaneously or separately. Upon launch, it will continue to rival the likes of the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and the new Skoda Kylaq in the compact SUV segment.
