Arsenal forward Kai Havertz had a dismal showing last night as his side conceded a defeat at the hands of Manchester United in the FA Cup. Arsenal endured an FA Cup third-round defeat after losing in a penalty shootout to Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium. Havertz missed a penalty during the shootout on Sunday. The German international also could not score a late winner during the extra time, as he failed to capitalise on an easy opportunity. After the game, Havertz’s wife Sophia disclosed that she was subjected to online abuse and shared several messages that she had received.

The caption of Sophia’s first screenshot read, “For anyone to think it’s okay to write something like this is so shocking to me. I hope you are so ashamed of yourself.” A second caption from Sophia on another message was, “I’m not sure what to even say but please guys be more respectful. We are better than this…”

Havertz and Sophia married on July 18 last year after getting engaged in 2023. The couple announced in November last year that they were expecting a baby. Havertz and Sophia reportedly started dating in 2018, when the German forward was playing for Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.

A 10-man Manchester United managed to thwart Arsenal and qualify for the next round of the FA Cup. Manchester United won the shootout 5-3 to beat the Gunners. Ruben Amorim’s men claimed the lead in the 52nd minute after Bruno Fernandes found the back of the net.

Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot was given the marching orders as he received a second yellow card for a challenge on Mikel Merino. Two minutes later, Gabriel scored an equaliser to bring Arsenal back into the contest. But it, eventually, proved to be futile as Arsenal lost in the penalty shootout.

Speaking to the BBC, after the game, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said, “It’s unbelievable. You measure the performance and what we did about the position, you know, you deserve to win the game by a mile. But the reality is we are out and the only thing that will be judged is that but internally I can’t.”

“I love my players. I love our team and I love how good they are and what they do because in 1000 games, you should lose one and probably it was this one. You have to understand this as well, it’s part of our industry, our game and move on because you don’t have time to do that because on Wednesday we have a massive one,” Arteta added.

In the FA Cup, Manchester United will next face Leicester City at home in the fourth round. Meanwhile, Arsenal will take on Tottenham in their next fixture in the Premier League on Thursday, January 16.
