Potential School Closures on the Table
The schools under consideration for closure include Hunter, Midnight Sun, Pearl Creek, Salcha, and Two Rivers elementary schools. This potential move is part of a larger consolidation strategy aimed at addressing a multi-million dollar deficit and the need to better allocate resources across the district. District officials have pointed to decreasing enrollment numbers, reduced birth rates, and a shrinking population in the area as key factors contributing to the financial strain.
Phased Approach to Decision-Making
The consolidation process has already unfolded in five phases. Phase 1, which took place in the spring of 2024, involved gathering feedback from families, staff, and community members through surveys and focus groups. This helped identify priorities and concerns related to the consolidation plan.
In the summer and fall of 2024 (Phase 2), a community facility team, consisting of district staff, parents, and local residents, reviewed the feedback and began to shape the consolidation framework. The team’s goal was to ensure that the plan aligned with the district’s educational vision and the needs of the community.
Phase 3, which occurred between November and December 2024, saw district administration work through the consolidation framework to develop a detailed plan. This plan will now be presented to the school board for review.
In Phase 4, set for January and February 2025, the school board will carefully review the recommended plan, taking public input into account. A final decision on which schools will close is expected to be made during this phase.
If approved, Phase 5, from February to June 2025, will see the district implement the school closures, working closely with the affected communities to ensure a smooth transition for students and staff.
