Every year, HigherEdJobs publishes hundreds of articles — from seasoned higher ed professionals and experts — to help readers find fulfilling higher education jobs, advance their careers, and troubleshoot workplace issues. As the year comes to a close, we’re taking a look back at all that happened in the higher ed community through our 2024 editorial content.

As we saw in recent years, health and well-being continued to be a focal point for both higher education professionals and institutions. Colleges and universities Helped Students Reach Their Highest Potential Through Well-Being Programs, re-examined How To Support Student-Athlete Success, and contemplated What It Takes for University Staff To Thrive. Likewise, higher education professionals remained more committed than ever to their own wellness. Some pondered How To Be Emotionally Present at Work When You Have Real Stuff Going on at Home. Meanwhile, others sought guidance on How to Talk to Your Boss About Being Overwhelmed and learned Why You Should Speak Up Before Switching Jobs.

If you did embark on a job search, you may have found yourself asking whether it’s better to have an Employment Gap or Take a Less-Preferred Job?, How To Use AI Effectively Throughout Your Job Search, or How To Find Joy in Your Job Search. No strangers to the ghosting that happens in higher ed job searches, we also made A Plea for Job Search Communication.

Despite the ever-growing focus on self-care, we didn’t forget that Small Actions Can Make a Big Impact on Your Colleagues. Team dynamics and compassion for others were common themes throughout the year. If you’re a manager, you may have considered How To Make Team Meetings More Productive and Inclusive. Recognizing that Workplace Interactions Can Be Tricky, managers and team members alike hopefully benefitted from exploring How Teams Can Create Guidelines for Working Together and Examining Our True Motives When Engaging in Conversation. In the face of legislative bans against diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging work, we wondered if Diversity Statements Are a Thing of the Past? Yet, colleges and universities continued to find ways to innovate and make this work possible. We examined Strategies for Trans/Nonbinary Inclusion in Higher Education, worked toward Reimagining Faculty Recruitment To Foster Inclusion, and Rethought Campus and Classroom Policies Through the Lens of a Commuter Student.

In an ever-changing landscape, it’s no secret that many higher ed professionals wondered How To Respond to Changes at Work but, hopefully, you were reminded there are still many reasons to Fall (Back) in Love with a Career in Higher Ed.
