UGC has set a target of implementing the new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in 50 per cent of the country’s universities and colleges by 2035. Currently, this education policy is implemented in 21 per cent of the colleges, the University Grants Commission Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar said. He further added that efforts are being made to implement the universal semester system and eliminate the system of annual examinations across colleges and varsities.

While attending the Zonal Conference at the School of Economics of Devi Ahilya University in Indore, Kumar discussed many issues including the effective implementation of the new National Education Policy. He also said implementing the semester system under NEP is a priority. The benefit of this will be that by conducting exams and getting the results at regular intervals, students will be able to see how much they have learned so far.

UGC had earlier requested the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to implement guidelines that allow students to take two academic courses at the same time, as described in the NEP 2020. In a circular, UGC Secretary Manish R. Joshi raised concern that, despite repeated reminders, many universities had not provided the two-course facility to students after more than two years since the guidelines were issued.

This year, the UGC has also asked universities to offer four-year UG programmes as per the Choice-Based Credit System. Students who decide to leave their studies after the first year and have secured 40 credits or more, will be given a UG certificate. Those who do a vocational course of four credits during the summer vacation will have the opportunity to complete their studies by taking admission to the degree programme again within three years. They will have a maximum of seven years to complete the degree programme.
