Tottenham Hotspurs boss Ange Postecoglou bellowed that he wouldn’t alter his style of attacking-minded football following the London side’s 2-2 draw against Italian giants Roma in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.

The Spurs had to settle for a point after former German International Mats Hummels netted the leveller for Claudio Ranieri’s Roma in second-half added time to salvage a draw, and Postecoglou asserted that he wasn’t one for a pragmatic style of play.

“There’s plenty of room for pragmatism in all walks of life and in football as well. But I’m just not interested in it, said the Tottenham boss.

“I don’t know why I need to change my approach to be like everyone else wants me to be,” the head coach added.

“I’ll continue to push this team to be a little bit different, play football in a different way,” the 59-year-old affirmed.

“Maybe when I’m long gone you’ll all pine for my entertainment, and you’ll have had your fill of pragmatism,” he stated.

Tottenham’s UEL draw comes days after the Londoners hammered Premier League holders Manchester City 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium, and Postecoglou explained how a victory of that margin wouldn’t have come to pass had he settled for a pragmatic approach.

“But look, if we were pragmatic I’d say at 2-0 up at City away, we’d have probably settled for 2-0 and we wouldn’t have got the victory we did and made it a special moment for our club,” Postecoglou reflected.

Tottenham seized the lead early on in the game against Roma before Eavn Ndicka levelled for the Italians. The English outfit restored their advantage thanks to Brennan Johnson before Hummels broke Tottenham hearts with his late strike.

“At the moment what do we have? We don’t have a hell of a lot,” he said. “We haven’t achieved anything yet, we haven’t had success, we haven’t done all those things we want to do,” Postecoglou continued.

“So if I start being pragmatic now then maybe we’ll never get there. Last night we weren’t at our highest level but I thought for 20 minutes we were as exciting as we’ve been since I’ve been here. We were exciting to watch. And that’s what I want,” the Spurs boss added.
