Mohun Bagan Super Giant defeated Jamshedpur FC 3-0 in the 2024-25 Indian Super League at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Saturday.
Tom Aldred, Liston Colaco and Jamie Mclaren scored as the Mariners went top of the ISL points table.
It was evident from kick-off that the Mariners wanted possession and the Men of Steel resolute in their belief in counter-attacks.
Mohun Bagan made all the possession count inside the 15 minutes as both their center-backs combined to give them the lead. Deepak Tangri’s shot from a Dimitri Petratos corner was deflected towards Alberto Rodriguez. The Spanish defender headed free ball over to Tom Aldred, who blasted it into the back of the net.
The goal seemed to have disheartened the visitors further as Mohun Bagan doubled down on the pressure. Come the 30th-minute mark, Dimitri and Jamie McLaren could have scored another but Albino Gomes’s save meant the Aussie duo were denied at goalmouth.
Liston Colaco created multiple chances, cutting in from the left wing and attempting right-footed shots. The move became too too predictable too son and yet Subham Sarangi kept falling for it. The final cross or shot was mostly found wanting.
All that changed in the final minute of added time of the first half. Liston found himself on the right wing and on receiving the ball from Manvir started his run. A lucky deflection on being challenged by two defenders later, the ball stuck to Liston feet such that he danced past three others to calmly slot the with his weaker foot into the bottom right.
After the restart, Jamshedpur FC looked renewed in their vigour to get a goal back. In the 50th minute, Rice Tachikawa had a golden chance to do just that but brave Vishal Kaith smothered the effort as the follow-up was called off for off-side.
The away side looked to press after the hour mark, trying to draw a mistake from Mohun Bagan but the Mariners ended up winning more fouls.
With the clock crossing 70, Jamshedpur FC had another chance to get a goal when substitute Mohammed Sanan received the ball on the left flank and left Dippendu Biswas with ease. He passed it on for Tachikawa, who in turn, combined well with Javier Siverio as the ball went across the face of the goal only for Rodriguez to clear.
Mohun Bagan though got their third. In the 75th minute, Tangri sent Manvir Singh free with a long ball, beating Jamshedpur’s off-side trap. With keeper Albino rushing out his goal, Manvir’s first-touch took the ball wide but also away from the keeper. He gained control, looked up and slotted the ball into Mclaren’s path who calmly smashed the ball into the back of the net.
