Justice Sanjiv Khanna Takes Oath As The 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI)
Justice Sanjiv Khanna recently took oath as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI), succeeding CJI DY Chandrachud. President Droupadi Murmu led the oath of office to Justice Khanna at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The 64-year-old Justice Khanna will serve a six-month tenure as the Chief Justice of India and will retire on May 13, 2025. He has been part of several landmark judgements, including the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, the ones of electoral bonds, and Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) as a Supreme Court judge.
What Is Red Rot Disease?
The flooding of the Sharda River recently inundated sugarcane fields, leading to a rapid spread of red rot disease. This devastating outbreak has turned the sugarcane stalks red and caused substantial losses for farmers. Farmers in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district are facing growing anxiety as red rot disease is spreading rapidly through their sugarcane crops. This severe disease, also known as “sugarcane cancer,” is caused by a fungus called Colletotrichum falcatum. The fungus’s growth of mycelium closes the plant’s transport tissues, which carry food and various minerals produced in the leaves from the soil. The affected leaves of the crop turn yellow and later dry up.
Can a Father’s Pension Be Entitled To A Daughter Instead Of His Wife?
After the death of any government employee, a fixed amount is given to his family every month, according to the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 2021. This amount, called family pension, is provided so that his family continues to get financial assistance even after his death. But can a daughter get a family pension? As per the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 2021, married, unmarried, and widowed daughters are eligible for family pension. To get a family pension, the daughter must be more than 25 years of age. The daughter remains eligible to get family pension until she gets a job, gets married, or does not have any mental/ physical disability.
SC Warns Against Bulldozer Action, Frames Rules
The Supreme Court came down heavily on the “bulldozer justice” trend recently and said that the executive cannot become judiciary and decide who is guilty. Pronouncing its verdict on the batch of pleas seeking to stop authorities’ “bulldozer action,” the top court said that the demolition carried out without permission would be considered “arbitrary.” The two-judge bench also issued Pan-India guidelines to stop the “illegal” demolition of homes and other properties. The top court said that proceedings of demolition should be video graphed and the demolition report shall be sent to the district collector. Moreover, the bench directed that no demolition be carried out without prior show cause notice and within 15 days from the date of the notice being served.
Influx Of Bangladeshi, Rohingya Migrants Worsens Mumbai’s Resource Crisis
Mumbai’s political and socioeconomic landscape is being transformed and reshaped by illegal immigration from Bangladesh and Myanmar, according to an investigation-driven study by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). As per the 118-page interim report titled ‘Illegal immigrants to Mumbai: Analysing socio-economic and political consequences’, migrants fill up low-skill jobs. As a result, salaries decline and local citizens feel resentful, which then becomes a vulnerability among political entities that can be used for vote bank dynamics. The report states that the growing numbers of Muslim immigrants exacerbate cultural concerns, which in turn feed societal tensions and differences. It further stated that the continuous influx demands urgent policy intervention to address security, employment, and community stability in the city.
