In the fourth standard, Sumita Sinha’s condition deteriorated a lot.

We often encounter people whose actions and teachings inspire us and guide us towards a determined career path. This sentiment is reflected in the inspirational journey of Dr Sumita Sinha, the Chief Medical Superintendent (CMS) of Ballia, who overcame a severe illness as a child and later rose to prominence in the medical field. Inspired by a doctor’s compassionate smile during her treatment, her story demonstrates that with the right motivation, anything is possible.

In an interview with Local 18, Dr Sumita Sinha shared details of her career journey. Originally from Ranchi, she is now the CMS of Ballia District Women’s Hospital. She grew up in Ranchi, where her mother worked as a teacher and her father was an engineer with the Heavy Engineering Corporation (HCE), a major industrial project spearheaded by Jawaharlal Nehru and constructed in 1964-65. She has three sisters and completed her schooling in Ranchi.

In the fourth standard, Dr Sinha’s condition deteriorated to the point that she had to be taken to AIIMS for a major illness. She shared that she hadn’t initially considered a career in medicine, but a nurse who attended her each morning and evening left a lasting impression. The nurse’s kindness and compassionate smile amazed her and motivated her to pursue a career as a doctor. “The nurse’s nature was so caring and compassionate that it inspired me to be a doctor like her, to bring joy to my patients simply through kind words,” she recalled.

From there, Dr Sinha began her journey in medicine, preparing for her post-graduation and M.D. in Bihar. Her first posting as a doctor was also in Ballia, where she learned a great deal.

Today, while working as the CMS at Ballia District Women’s Hospital, Dr Sinha emulates her role model by greeting her patients with a smile. Despite multiple attempts to find the nurse who inspired her all those years ago, she has yet to locate her. Her journey highlights the power of compassion in shaping lives and careers.
