Thailand’s TotalEnergies Corbion advances PLA for tough applications

TotalEnergies Corbion is advancing sustainable innovation with Luminy Polylactic Acid (PLA), exploring its relatively untapped potential for durable, high-performance applications. Traditionally used in products like food packaging and 3D printing, PLA is now proving its value in demanding injection molding applications. At Fakuma 2024, the leading trade fair for industrial plastics processing, TotalEnergies Corbion will showcase how their scientists are evolving Luminy PLA to meet the rigorous growing needs of consumers and brand owners.

TotalEnergies Corbion is advancing Luminy Polylactic Acid (PLA) for durable, high-performance uses like cosmetic jars and medical instruments.
At Fakuma 2024, they will showcase innovations in PLA’s heat resistance, strength, and sustainability, highlighting its low carbon footprint and diverse applications, including 3D printing and nonwovens.

Advancing Luminy PLA Durability and Versatility

Historically associated with single-use packaging, PLA is now showing promise in durable goods, thanks to advancements in Luminy PLA’s heat resistance, mechanical strength, and weatherability through compounding. These developments make Luminy PLA suitable for robust applications such as cosmetic jars, electronic components, and dishwasher-safe products. Additionally, innovations like flame-retardant and high-impact-resistant Luminy PLA compounds are opening new possibilities in technically demanding areas where safety and durability are paramount.

Seda Cantekin, global segment leader for TotalEnergies Corbion, said: “Luminy PLA’s durable applications align with global sustainability efforts, as it is derived from renewable resources and boasts a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to conventional plastics like ABS, PS, or PP. What’s more, Luminy PLA can be processed using standard techniques, such as injection molding, simplifying the transition to eco-friendly alternatives without compromising performance.”

Luminy PLA Applications on Display at Fakuma 2024

At Fakuma 2024, TotalEnergies Corbion will demonstrate how Luminy PLA is utilized in various durable applications for the medical and healthcare industries. Items developed with Luminy PLA, will be on display including FDA-approved biobased pill bottles from Innovative Bottles and medical instruments from Bridea Medical. These solutions include developing closed loop recycling models that contribute to the circular economy, promoting the environmental sustainability of these vital sectors.

More than just durable applications, TotalEnergies Corbion will also proudly showcase 3D printing applications and nonwoven applications at Fakuma this year.
