In this conversation, Shah Rukh Khan delved into his artistic interpretation of the legendary figure, revealing that he approached the role from a unique perspective. Rather than depicting him solely as a figure of sorrow and misfortune, he sought to portray him as a complex individual shaped by his motivations and experiences. “I didn’t want you to feel love for him, but I didn’t want you to hate him either. Nor did I want you to like him for being an alcoholic who runs away from every girl he falls in love with. I just wanted him to appear indescribable,” he shared.

The actor confessed to experiencing considerable anxiety during production, which led him to seek solace in drink while immersed in the character’s emotional turmoil. When asked whether this coping mechanism was beneficial, he humorously remarked, “Well, I got the Best Actor award.” However, he acknowledged the darker side of this choice, noting, “It might have helped, but I started drinking after the film and that’s one downside to it.”

Reflecting on his decision to take on a role that had been previously brought to life by legendary performers, Shah Rukh expressed a deep personal connection to the story. He shared his sentimental belief that creating significant films would enable his late parents to witness his work from beyond. “For some reason, I always felt if I make films which are very big, my mom and dad could see them from heaven. It’s a childish thought, but I still think my mom’s a star. I even know the star she is,” he revealed.

He acknowledged the weight of history behind the character, admitting, “I didn’t think I could play the character because some of the greatest artistes in our country like Dilip Kumar, KL Saigal and Uttam Kumar had played it flawlessly earlier.” Despite the hesitations voiced by esteemed colleagues advising him against stepping into such monumental shoes, Shah Rukh was resolute in his desire to bring his interpretation to life. He expressed gratitude towards Bhansali for his guidance and support throughout the creative process.

Featuring a stellar cast that included Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff, and Kirron Kher, the film was an adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s revered novel.
