Pothole: Hazardous Conditions on Rahate Colony-Freedom Park Road Endanger Motorists | Nagpur News

Nagpur: One of the busiest road stretches in Nagpur, from Rahate Colony Square to Freedom Park Square near Zero Mile, is becoming increasingly hazardous for motorists. Unlike most roads in the city that have been concretised, this stretch remains an asphalt road, which has developed several risk-prone areas. The deteriorating condition of the road, combined with several potholes and uneven surfaces, poses a danger to daily commuters.
Sample this: At Jhansi Rani Square, while approaching from Variety Square, a large pothole is located right in front of a petrol pump. The pothole is particularly dangerous for motorists, especially at night, as it sits directly on the free left turn, making it difficult to avoid without risking an accident. Motorists who frequent this road have reported the challenges of navigating around this pothole, particularly during low-light conditions.
A regular commuter of the route, Akshit Pandhurne (24), said, “I mainly travel by bike for work, and I have had the rim of the wheel bent because of these deep potholes. This incident happened during the rainy season, and when these potholes fill up with water, it is dangerous. Motorists are at a risk of hurting themselves or causing a chain of accidents.”
Additionally, the illegally parked autos at the squares and alongside the road add to the woes. A similar situation can be found at Lokmat Square for those traveling from Rahate Colony Square. The road also has multiple potholes, which not only slow down traffic but also create the potential for accidents.
Until recently, the road stretching from Panchsheel Square to Jhasi Rani Square was in a pathetic condition. It was patched a few days back. However, the uneven patchwork repairs done on certain sections have not helped the situation, making it troublesome even for four-wheelers, let alone two-wheeler riders.
Another commuter Viraj Kumar (30) said, “I have witnessed accidents caused by these potholes, especially in heavy traffic areas with buses and numerous vehicles navigating narrow sections. These roads are poorly constructed, and tar roads falling apart during the rains is the result of substandard work by contractors. Even the cement roads are cracking within a year of construction. Patch-up work isn’t a solution to these potholes.”
In addition to the damaged road surface, loose gravel and debris further exacerbate the risks. With thousands of vehicles passing through this stretch daily, there is an urgent need for repairs.
