This year, the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) collected data on healthcare benefits (healthcare plans and wellness programs), paid time off (PTO) benefits, tuition benefits, and retirement benefits in the 2021 Benefits in Higher Education Annual Report.
The report highlights an overview of the current state of benefit offerings in higher education after the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 349 institutions provided data for this year’s report.

Highlights from the report:
- Less than 40 percent of the institutions surveyed offer a paid parental leave in addition to vacation and sick time.
- Institutions are more likely to offer tuition benefits to unmarried same-sex partners (42 percent) than unmarried opposite-sex partners (37 percent).
- Employees at institutions with separate PTO plans receive more total PTO days than employees at institutions with combined PTO plans.
- The 403(b) retirement plan is the most popular retirement plan (96 percent of private institutions offer it and 97 percent of public institutions offer this plan).
- A 2-plan combination of Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan and High Deductible Health Plan (HDH) is the most popular healthcare plan combination, 37 percent of institutions offer this combination.
