The Mavrick 440, a result of Hero’s collaboration with Harley-Davidson, stands as their most premium offering. Sharing its motor with the Harley-Davidson X440, it has the largest capacity among Hero motorcycles and the highest performance figures so far. So, we were eager to see how it would perform in our test cycle. Here’s what we discovered.

Hero Mavrick 440 real world efficiency

As usual, we started by filling the Mavrick 440’s fuel tank and riding it for about 60 km on the highway, cruising at around 80 kph (the speed limit on the highway stretch where we conduct these tests) in 6th gear. Once again, we filled the tank to the brim at the end of our test, during which the Mavrick 440 consumed 1.53 litres of fuel. It also achieved a highway efficiency figure of 39.2 kpl, significantly better than the Harley X440, which returned 31.81 kpl in our tests.

 

We then headed to Mumbai, where we rode the Mavrick 440 through mixed traffic conditions for 50 km. At the end of our ride, the Mavrick 440 achieved a city efficiency figure of 31.71 kpl, slightly surpassing its American counterpart’s 29.43 kpl.

The Hero Mavrick 440 is powered by a 440cc single-cylinder engine that delivers a healthy dose of torque across its rev range. Its broad torque makes it highly tractable and suitable for various scenarios. Our reference  point is the  Harley Davidson X440’s engine, which features different tuning, 2Nm more torque and also different gearing, thanks to Hero’s smaller 17-inch wheels. Additionally, the Hero weighs approximately 8kg less than the Harley. However, the difference between the Hero and the Harley was larger than expected, prompting us to test the Mavrick twice on the highway and both yielded similar results.

Our fuel efficiency testing routine starts with filling the tank to its maximum capacity and verifying that the bike’s tyre pressures match with the manufacturer’s recommendations. The bike is then ridden along designated city and highway routes, maintaining average speeds that closely replicate real-world conditions. The weight is kept constant by balancing rider weights and ballast to ensure consistent data across different motorcycles and riders. At the end of the run, the fuel tank is refilled to the same point, allowing us to measure the consumption against the trip metre reading.
