PM Modi calls Emergency ‘black spot’ on democracy; Congress chief Kharge hits back | India News

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched a scathing attack on Congress and described the declaration of Emergency as a “black spot” on India’s democracy a day ahead of its 50th anniversary
During his address to the media ahead of the first session of the 18th Lok sabha PM Modi said, “Tomorrow is 25th June. 25th June marks 50 years of the blot that was put on the democracy of India. The new generation of India will never forget that the Constitution of India was completely rejected, every part of the Constitution was torn to pieces, the country was turned into a prison, democracy was completely suppressed.”
“While protecting our Constitution, while protecting the democracy of India, the democratic traditions, the countrymen will take a resolution that no one will dare to do such a thing in India again which was done 50 years ago. We will take a resolution of a vibrant democracy. We will take a resolution to fulfil the dreams of the common people as per the directions of the Constitution of India,” he added.
Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge who was protesting inside the Parliament complex along with other oppposition leaders countered PM Modi and accused him of acting as declaration is in place an emergency, without even declaring it.
“They constantly reference the Emergency from 50 years ago, but now, without even declaring an emergency, they are acting as if one is in place. How long do they plan to continue ruling by using the same rhetoric?” Kharge said.
“The public supported us, but Mr. Modi has attempted to undermine the Constitution. This is why all party leaders have united in this protest, and we are demonstrating at the Gandhi statue. The government is violating every democratic norm, and we want to send a message to Mr. Modi, follow the Constitution.”
