Nagpur: Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Ramtek unit has taken exception to a June 5 speech by Congress’ Rashmi Barve, wife of MP-elect Shyamkumar, wherein she staked claim to the Ramtek assembly seat for her party.
Sena UBT deputy district chief Prem Rodekar said that Barve should not make such statements unless it’s cleared at the Mahayuti level. Rashmi Barve said that her remarks during the public event were ‘unintentional’.
Rodekar said, “On June 5, she said Congress veteran Rajendra Mulak would contest the assembly polls from Ramtek.I want to put it on record that no such decision has been taken by the alliance. The Ramtek seat belongs to us and is our stronghold.”
While the Ramtek Lok Sabha seat was always allotted to the erstwhile united Shiv Sena by ally BJP, the assembly constituency did see a tug-of-war. Shiv Sena won the seat consecutively from 1999 till the 2009 polls, with Ashish Jaiswal as its candidate. In 2014, BJP’s Mallikarjun Reddy wrested the seat, and when in 2019 it went back to BJP’s kitty, Jaiswal rebelled. Contesting as an independent, Jaiswal won and later went with Eknath Shinde’s faction.
Rodekar said: “Sena-UBT voters contributed to Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) victory in Ramtek Lok Sabha seat in a big way. Hence no alliance partner should make arbitrary statements.”
Barve said the issue got blown out of proportion. “I was excited after my husband’s victory in the Lok Sabha polls. The next day at a thanksgiving speech, I casually mentioned the Ramtek assembly seat. It was in my capacity as a Congress party worker, I have no authority to make such decisions so this should not be taken too seriously,” said Barve.
