NAGPUR: A scientist from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has been sentenced to five years in jail and fined Rs 1.10 lakh by a special CBI court in a bribery case from 2015, officials announced on Wednesday.
The case involved Bipin Jambholkar, a Grade A scientific cadre officer who was serving as a nodal officer for BIS Nagpur at the time. Jambholkar was working as a Scientist-C (lot cell) in the Enforcement and legal activities department of BIS when the CBI registered a case against him on March 9, 2015, following a complaint.
The CBI conducted an investigation and filed a chargesheet against Bipin on February 26, 2016.The trial lasted eight years, during which the court examined 15 witnesses and the CBI prosecutor presented 91 documents and other evidence.
“The Court, after trial, found the accused guilty and sentenced him accordingly. 15 witnesses were examined and 91 documents were exhibited by the prosecution during trial, which stood the test of trial, resulting in the conviction of the accused,” the CBI said on Wednesday.
