EXCLUSIVE: ‘Sona Kitna Sona Hai’ song from Crew is about gold smuggling; say composers Akshay & IP, “It’s completely in Punjabi” : Bollywood News

Along with ‘Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai’, Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kriti Sanon starrer Crew has another 90s song reimagined in the form of ‘Sona Kitna Sona Hai’ from Hero No. 1. Unlike the Govinda and Karisma Kapoor starrer, this time the ‘Sona’ in the song actually means gold. Music composer duo Akshay Raheja and IP Singh, popularly, known as Akshay & IP revealed this to Bollywood Hungama in an exclusive conversation.

EXCLUSIVE: ‘Sona Kitna Sona Hai’ song from Crew is about gold smuggling; say composers Akshay & IP, “It’s completely in Punjabi”

“From the trailer, you would have known that it’s a heist situation (in the film). And there is something to do with gold, right?” said Akshay. He added that when the rushes of the film were shown to them, they instantly thought of this song. “Something related to gold and smuggling was going on. I started strumming my guitar and we both somehow started humming ‘Sona Kitna Sona Hai’,” said Akshay.

He also excitedly said that they have presented the song in a completely new avatar. “You would never imagine ‘Sona Kitna Sona Hai’ going into proper hip-hop, rap in California style. It’s completely in Punjabi, taking it way far away from how the regular ‘Sona Kitna Sona Hai’ sounds. The treatment which we have given is completely new,” he said.

About working together with Akshay, IP said that it has always been fun and added, “We know each other for now 16 years. We were making music in Delhi. Then we went on our own way. Then we came together in Bombay. We are able to bring something out of nothing when we are working together. I think something unique can only happen when Akshay and IP are working together. We really cherish it. We don’t know how it is but it is.”

When asked how they solved their disagreements, IP joked, “We go into a room and do a fist fight. Jo jeet jata hai ladaai mein uska kehna nahin mana jata hai. That’s also something how things come naturally and easily because we deal with disagreements. If we don’t enjoy (a tune), we say it and try something else. There are some days when nothing is happening. On such days we decide to relax. Akshay is a very polite guy, so it’s very easy to work with him. Woh pyaar se baat karta hai toh manwa hi leta hai. Meethi chhuri jise bolte hain na.”

Akshay has an interesting observation about Mumbai as he went on narrating his experience after migrating here. “When we were in Delhi, we had a very different perception about Bombay and the film industry in general. In media related industries, when you see it from a distance, you wonder how it would be. A lot of people don’t get support from their families. There is a pre-conceived notion about the happenings in the industry. When we started working here, we realized it’s completely different from what we had heard about. We realized that over here people really take pride and passion in their work.”

He added, “Why I am saying this is because we have made music in Delhi also. That was a very different scope of work we were catering to. Over here, there are high stakes but the process is something we really enjoy. And then when your work is released, you feel worth for all the hardships.”

IP’s obversation got this writer into splits. “Main toh paise ke liye kuchh bhi karta hoon,” he said and when it was pointed out that this was Akshay Kumar’s iconic dialogue from Hera Pheri, he said, “Exactly! I fell in love with Bombay at the age of 30 when I was able to come here. I gave Rs. 50 to the auto-rickshaw driver when Rs 48 was the bill and he gave me Rs. 2 back; it brought tears to my eyes.”

On a more serious note, he added, “Generally, I was always fascinated with Bombay and the film industry. I went to see a film being shot by a friend where I got to know that there is something called focus puller, which is such an important job in the industry but nobody knows. I saw so many people at so many levels working so hard. It has been a great journey and Bombay has embraced our move here so beautifully.”
