The residents have formally appealed to the collector, police commissioner and superintendent of excise to now allow the liquor shop.
While talking to TOI, a resident Sheshrao Kharde said, “The liquor shop shares a common wall with a clinic, which specialises in children’s healthcare.Additionally, there are educational institutions and hospitals in close proximity, with the nearest ones being within a 100-metre radius.”
Kharde further said, “There are already two wine shops located just below the Metro station on the same side of the road. We don’t want the problem to compound further.”
Residents said the shop is situated near the Bansi Nagar Metro station. “Our unease is centred on the daily necessity for school children, women, and senior citizens to pass in front of the shop, since many use the Metro for work and kids use it to get to school,” said resident Ravi Yelure, whose house shares a common wall with the shop. “Situations like these raise broader apprehensions about safety, convenience and its potential impact on the well-being of children and women,” he added.
DCP zone 1 Anurag Jain told TOI: “Although I’m not aware of the issue, if people are protesting against this we will surely take cognizance of the matter. We will address the problem in the ambit of law, since we are just one of the authorities dealing with liquor shop permit.”
The women residents also highlighted serious safety concerns. One of the residents, Vaishnavi Yelure, said, “Alcoholics will queue up in front of our home as they do at the adjacent wine shops. Even entering and exiting our own house will become a challenge.”
Another resident, Shobha Padole, said, “We don’t oppose the opening of a liquor shop; we simply want they should relocate it to another place.”
Collector Itankar told TOI, “We are not the only authority in such cases, but I will look into the matter.”
