Nagpur: The city experienced a wet December for the sixth consecutive year, recording 10.2mm rainfall (on December 7) while the weather conditions remained cloudy in the first week of the month.
This was the second highest rainfall received in December in the last two decades. Since 2001, Nagpur has received rains in nine Decembers. However, this didn’t have a major impact on maximum or minimum temperatures which remained almost the same as compared to last year, though the citizens felt chilling effect because of narrow difference between maximum and minimum temperatures.

All the rainy days in the last six Decembers were first two days of the month as per the recorded data of regional met office. A rainfall of 14.8mm recorded in December 2019 is the highest since 2001.
The month of December received its all-time highest rainfall of 165.7mm in the year 1967 and highest 24-hour rainfall of 61mm in 1962.
The rains this year were brought in by cyclone Michaung in the Bay of Bengal.
Citizens got hill station-like vibes with clouds flowing low and maximum temperature dropping 4.5 degrees below normal for a couple of days. Between December 5 and 8, the difference between maximum and minimum temperature dropped to as much as three degrees. On December 6, the maximum temperature was around 22 degrees Celsius while minimum temperature was at 19 degrees.
The aftereffects of cyclone Michaung subsided gradually after December 11. The clear sky and cold winds flowing from North India dropped the minimum temperature to 9.4 degrees Celsius on December 19.

In terms of rainfall, November 2023 experienced unseasonal rains, unlike November 2022 when no rainfall was recorded. The IMD’s Colaba and Santacruz observatories recorded 39.5mm and 8.2mm of rainfall, respectively.
