NEW DELHI: In a mark of protest, Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia said he will return his Padmi Shri to the Prime Minister. This decision comes in response to the election of Sanjay Singh, a loyalist of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, as the president of the Wrestling Federation of India.
Sakshi Malik on Thursday announced her retirement from the sport as a mark of protest against the election result.
In January this year, Bajrang, Vinesh Phogat, and Malik launched a protest against Brij Bhushan, advocating vehemently for a change in leadership at the Wrestling Federation of India. However, despite their efforts, a close associate of the BJP MP now holds the position at the helm.
Sanjay Singh, the UP Wrestling Association vice-president hailing from Varanasi, secured 40 votes as against seven of his rival and 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Anita Sheoran.
