The United States has launched a specialised educational initiative aligned with India’s recent National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020. This initiative offers Indian students the opportunity to pursue one-year professional master’s degrees with a focus on the industrial specialisation at American universities.
These programmes are exclusively centered around science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines, commencing from the fall semester of 2024.
Upon successful completion of the courses, students are permitted to remain in the US for a maximum of three years, in accordance with existing visa regulations, to acquire industry work experience and manage their student loans.
Presently, more than 20 American universities and over 15 Indian universities are actively engaging in conversations to leverage this initiative, facilitated by the US State Department. The architect behind this program is Akhilesh Lakhtakia, a Jefferson Science Fellow at the State Department’s South and Central Asia (SCA) bureau.
India’s National Education Policy, introduced as the NEP 2020 after nearly two decades, aims to achieve three primary objectives: ensuring universal access to education for all Indians, blending a global perspective with a focus on Indian cultural and knowledge systems and fostering a collaborative relationship between students and educators.
Central to the NEP’s vision is the establishment of an educational framework rooted in Indian values that catalyses India’s transition into an equitable and sustainable knowledge-driven society.
