Data from travel portals indicate that tourists are displaying increased interest for multiple short getaways this monsoon

During monsoon, many tourist destinations offer a tranquil charm that draws travellers. It is perfect for those who hate the hustle and bustle seen at these spots during summer or Diwali vacations.

According to estimates by the Travel Agents’ Federation of India (Tafi) Gujarat, there has been a 35% increase in leisure holiday bookings during the months of July and September compared to last year.

Manish Sharma, chairman of Tafi Gujarat, explains, “Those who wish to avoid crowds and take advantage of discounted hotel tariffs often choose to travel during the monsoon season. The trend initially began with road trips to nearby destinations. However, lately, people are also opting for long-haul domestic and international destinations.

Popular international destinations include Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Dubai, Bali, Indonesia, and Mauritius. Goa, Mahabaleshwar, Udaipur, Kumbhalgarh, Mount Abu, Dehradun, Rishikesh as well as trekking trips in the Western Ghats are popular domestic choices.”

Turkiye all set to receive highest number of visitors from India in 2023

The cities of Istanbul and Nevsehir have been the most frequented, attracting Indian tourists with their remarkable landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Turkiye has emerged as the preferred destination for Indian travellers seeking FIT and MICE segments, leading to a considerable upsurge in visits this year. Last year, the destination welcomed 2,32,000 visitors from India.

Faraz A, a student from Gandhinagar who is heading to Shillong to unwind, shares his experience: “Travelling to the mountains during the monsoon season is enchanting. The serenity that surrounds you at this time of year is incredibly calming and rejuvenating.”Likewise, Sharad K, a professional based in Ahmedabad, often embarks on bike trips during the monsoon season. “The off-season is the perfect time for a scenic ride to the mountains. The cool weather and breath-taking landscapes make exploring on my bike an absolute delight. I have driven to Udaipur and Mount Abu and have gone hiking in various places,” he says.

Upscale properties in Udaipur are experiencing brisk business even during the usually lean monsoon season, thanks to an influx of leisure travellers.

Sandipan Bose, general manager of Mementos by ITC Hotels Ekaaya Udaipur, reveals, “The proximity of our resort to Nathdwara and Eklingji temples, which are popular among tourists from Gujarat, makes it an ideal weekend getaway. We attract a lot of tourists, including couples, families, and corporate groups from across Gujarat who come here to unwind and enjoy the panoramic views of the Aravallis.”

Travellers looking to indulge in premium experiences at reduced costs also take advantage of the lower hotel tariffs during the monsoon season.

Rajesh Magow, co-founder and group CEO of MakeMyTrip, says, “Monsoon is also the optimal period for culture, nature, and adventure enthusiasts to appreciate unique experiences such as trekking in the Western Ghats or rejuvenating retreats amidst lush green landscapes.”

“While Goa remains the most preferred leisure destination, we are also seeing increasing interest in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kashmir, and Rajasthan. In the religious travel segment, Varanasi, Tirupati, Rameswaram, Dwarka, and Madurai are currently leading the pack in terms of inquiries,” Rajesh added.
