NAGPUR: The highway safety patrol police, under additional director general, traffic, Ravinder Singal, has started erecting colourful flags and playing pre-recorded public announcements at entry, exits, interchanges and also at toll booths on Samruddhi Expressway as a counter-measure to tackle highway hypnosis.
Superintendent of police, highway security police, Yeshwant Solanke, said the stretch under his jurisdiction — from Nagpur to Sindkhed Raja — will have at least 100-150 colourful flags to break the monotonous journey for the driver, and prerecorded announcements suggesting motorists to rest at petrol pumps and such places in case the drivers are feeling sleepy or exhausted.
Through the announcements, drivers will be advised to maintain at least 200 metre distance from the vehicle ahead and not to consume any intoxicants. “We are erecting flags at stretches under traffic assistance posts at Dhamangaon, Malkapur, Khursapar, Jamb and Amani. Public announcements to prevent highway hypnosis have been introduced at 11 places between Nagpur and Sindkhed Raja,” said Solanke.
Singal said talks are underway with Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to evolve measures to curtail accidents on the Samruddhi Mahamarg, especially to combat highway hypnosis which is being considered as one of the major reasons behind the accidents. Solanke added efforts are also being made to ensure that motorists remain alert, follow traffic rules and drive safely
