only students belonging to the economically weaker section (EWS), regardless of their castes, are eligible for this scheme
The state government of Maharashtra has mandated that all private or self-financed universities in the state offer a 50 per cent concession in fees to 10 per cent of their students. However, only students belonging to the economically weaker section (EWS), regardless of their castes, are eligible for this scheme.
A Government Resolution (GR) issued on Thursday states that this initiative aims to support students at private universities who do not benefit from any of the state’s scholarship and fee waiver programs. However, the universities themselves will bear the expenses of the scheme, as the state will not provide them with any grants for its implementation.
In Maharashtra, there are 27 self-financed universities, which differ from deemed universities or ‘deemed to be universities’ that attain university status from the central government due to their exceptional standards in a specific field of study. Self-financed universities, on the other hand, are established by private entities with approval from the state government.
“The proposal to provide concessions to economically weaker section students in private universities was made due to the difficulties they faced in paying fees. The decision takes into account various factors and aligns with the National Education Policy’s focus on student-centric education,” stated the GR.
The universities have been instructed to offer the fee concession at the time of admission and submit a report to the government within a month after completing the admission process.
