According to Edwina Raj, head of services, clinical nutrition and dietetics at Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, the following kind of foods should be avoided in hot weather.

High-salt foods: Salt-heavy foods like ultra-processed snacks, fast food, and packaged meals can contribute to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. Raj warns that these foods require more fluid for digestion, making it harder to stay hydrated.

Heavy and greasy meals: “Heavy, greasy meals can raise body temperature, cause sluggishness, and make it difficult to stay active and hydrated,” said Raj. Fried and oily foods take longer to digest and can lead to discomfort in hot weather.

Sugary beverages: While sugary drinks may seem refreshing, Raj said, “they cause a sharp spike in blood sugar followed by a crash, leading to fatigue and drowsiness.”

Hydrating fruits and vegetables: Opt for water-rich fruits and vegetables such as cucumbers, watermelon, oranges, and leafy greens. These help cool the body while providing essential nutrients.

Foods rich in antioxidants and electrolytes: Meals rich in electrolytes and probiotics help maintain hydration and gut health. Raj recommended fermented rice with water, buttermilk, yoghurt, and fruit smoothies as great choices for summer.

Lean proteins: Lighter protein sources like grilled chicken or fish are easier to digest than heavier meats and provide sustained energy without making you feel sluggish.

Whole grains: Whole grains such as barley, quinoa, oats, unpolished rice, and millets release energy gradually, helping maintain stamina throughout the day.
